How We Work

Artful Memories is not just about activities, but about how those activities are designed and delivered. Our approach is based on:

  • Respect and dignity
We always treat elderly participants as individuals with a rich inner life, not just as recipients of help. Their choices, comfort, and boundaries are prioritized at every step.
  • Empathy and active listening
Volunteers and team members receive guidance and support on how to listen without judgment, how to be patient, and how to respond with sensitivity to emotional or cognitive challenges.
  • Consistency and trust
Instead of one-time events, the project unfolds gradually over twelve months, allowing relationships to develop at a natural pace. Familiar faces and repeated visits build a sense of security.
  • Creativity and flexibility
Activities are adapted to the needs, abilities, and energy levels of the participants. The goal is not artistic perfection but genuine expression and enjoyment.
  • Reflection and learning
After each phase of the project, the Youth Estia team reflects on the experience, documents observations, collects feedback, and adjusts future steps. Participants’ reactions, staff input, and volunteer experiences all inform the ongoing process.

Who We Work With

Artful Memories is implemented in close cooperation with:

  • Veria Nursing Home – The institution that hosts the project and supports the participation of elderly residents. Staff members help us understand daily routines, needs, and practical considerations, ensuring that activities integrate smoothly into the life of the nursing home.
  • Local youth and volunteers – Young people from Veria and the wider region are invited to join as volunteers. They assist during workshops, engage in conversations, help with artistic tasks, and support the documentation process (photography, video, notes).
  • The wider community – Local families, friends, and community members are encouraged to follow the project’s progress, attend presentations or small exhibitions, and recognize the value of intergenerational initiatives.

The Team Behind Artful Memories

Artful Memories is developed and coordinated by Youth Estia, a youth initiative composed of young women with different educational and professional backgrounds, including:

  • Speech Therapy – supporting communication with older adults, especially those with cognitive or language difficulties,
  • Law and Public Speaking – contributing to advocacy, ethical considerations, and clear communication about the project’s goals,
  • International Relations – connecting the project with broader European frameworks, solidarity values, and potential future collaborations,
  • Education and Pedagogy – helping design learning experiences that are accessible, meaningful, and inclusive,
  • Media, Communication, and Audiovisual Production – ensuring that the project’s activities and outcomes are documented, communicated, and shared with care and professionalism.

Together, they bring a unique combination of heart, skills, and professional knowledge to the project — united by a common desire to make a positive difference in their community.

Our Values

Artful Memories is guided by a set of values that shape every decision we make:

  • Solidarity – We believe in standing by those who may feel forgotten or marginalized and supporting them through meaningful, respectful action.
  • Human dignity – Every participant is approached as a full, complex person, not defined by age, illness, or social status.
  • Inclusiveness – We welcome diversity and strive to create spaces where everyone feels seen and accepted.
  • Creativity – We use art as a tool for healing, communication, and exploration of identity.
  • Intergenerational dialogue – We see value in the meeting between ages, where each generation has something important to offer the other.
  • Local engagement & European spirit – While deeply rooted in Veria, the project is inspired by European values of social cohesion, participation, and mutual respect.
